Cherai Beach, nestled along the Malabar Coast in Kerala, India, is a place of contrasts. On one side, you have the calm backwaters, and on the other, the roaring Arabian Sea. It’s a paradise for barefoot wanderers, but I decided to go against the grain, literally, and lace up a pair of New Balance 608 v5s. This iconic dad-shoe is known for its chunky aesthetic, plush cushioning, and reliable build. But how would it hold up against the shifting sands, occasional saltwater splashes, and long coastal strolls? I was about to find out.
I arrived at Cherai in the early hours of the morning, when the golden sunrise painted the wet sand in hues of amber. Locals jogged past me barefoot, confused glances cast my way as I tied the laces of the 608 v5. My mission was simple but ambitious: to see if this walking shoe could live up to its reputation in one of the most dynamic terrains imaginable.
First Impressions: Built Like a Tank, Feels Like a Cloud

Straight out of the box, the 608 v5 feels substantial. At 386 grams (13.6 oz), it’s not a lightweight shoe by any means. But the moment I slipped it on, that weight translated into a comforting sense of security. The leather upper, complete with suede overlays, gives the shoe a premium feel and suggests durability.
The fit was true to size, and the padding around the collar and tongue was immediately noticeable. These shoes are made for long hours of wear. The dual-density collar foam hugged my ankles like a memory foam pillow, and the insole, removable and orthotic-friendly, added yet another layer of plushness.
Even before I started walking, I could tell that New Balance wasn’t messing around with comfort. But the beach is no carpeted mall; it’s a rugged, unpredictable landscape. And that’s where the real test began.
Walking on Sand: Unexpected Grace in Every Step

The first challenge was, of course, the loose dry sand near the entrance of the beach. Most shoes sink and slide in this terrain, making every step a mini workout. The 608 v5, surprisingly, handled it with relative ease. The 9.6 mm drop gave me a slight forward lean, aiding my stride. More importantly, the NDurance rubber outsole with flex grooves provided just enough grip to keep me upright.
I did feel the weight here, though. Unlike trail shoes that are designed to be nimble, the 608 v5 made me work a bit harder. But the trade-off was worth it. The ABZORB cushioning in the heel absorbed the shock of each uneven step, and the firm midsole (30.6 HA) ensured that I didn’t feel like I was walking on marshmallows.

Wet Sand and Saltwater: A Test of Materials and Grip

I moved closer to the surf, where the sand was firmer and wet. This is where most shoes either shine or slip, literally. The NDurance rubber outsole of the 608 v5 surprised me again. The coefficient of friction (0.52) is above average, and it showed. Even when the tide rolled in and my shoes were momentarily submerged, I didn’t lose my footing.
The leather upper did absorb some moisture, but not enough to cause discomfort. However, this is where the breathability, or lack thereof, became noticeable. Rated at just 2/5, the shoe relies mostly on its mesh tongue for ventilation. On a humid beach, my feet did begin to feel a bit warm after a while.
That said, the internal shank and heel counter stiffness (4/5) provided excellent structural support. My feet stayed stable and aligned even on the uneven, shifting surface. This made long walks along the beach much more pleasant than I had anticipated.
Long Distance Comfort: Dad Shoe, Marathon Soul

After about 5 kilometers of walking, half on sand, half on the adjacent paved trail, I was ready to make a judgment on comfort. Simply put, the New Balance 608 v5 excels in this department. The cushioned insole, combined with a moderately firm midsole, struck a balance between softness and support. It didn’t feel squishy, but it didn’t feel like I was walking on bricks either.
The tongue padding, a generous 13.4 mm, added to the overall comfort, although it did contribute to the shoe’s heft. The dual-density collar foam was particularly appreciated as I climbed over some rocks near the beach’s northern end. My ankles stayed protected, and there was zero slippage inside the shoe.
I also noticed that the shoe didn’t lose its shape despite the challenging terrain. The torsional rigidity (4/5) and the high heel counter stiffness helped maintain form, which in turn reduced foot fatigue.
Durability: Built to Last, Built to Work

Cherai Beach is not just sand. It’s shells, pebbles, salt, and the occasional rogue crab. These elements can be brutal on lesser shoes. But the 608 v5 shrugged it all off. The suede toebox, which scored a 5/5 on durability tests, held up admirably against abrasions. Even after intentionally scraping it against some coral and driftwood, there were no noticeable scuffs.
The outsole thickness of 4.8 mm, combined with its high hardness rating of 85.9 HC, means this shoe is built for the long haul. While the heel padding durability was rated lower (2/5), I didn’t notice any discomfort or wear after my beach escapade. Still, it’s something to be mindful of if you plan to use these as daily drivers.
Final Thoughts: A Beach-Worthy Dad Shoe?

The New Balance 608 v5 may not have been designed with beaches in mind, but it held its own admirably at Cherai. Yes, it’s heavy. And yes, it’s not the most breathable shoe out there. But what it lacks in those areas, it more than makes up for in comfort, support, and durability.
Whether you’re a nurse standing for long shifts, a city explorer, or someone looking for a reliable pair of walking shoes with a retro vibe, the 608 v5 delivers. And if it can survive the sands, salt, and sun of Cherai Beach, it can probably handle just about anything your day throws at it.
So go ahead, embrace the dad-shoe aesthetic. Your feet will thank you.
Would I Recommend It for Beach Walks?
Strangely enough, yes. While it’s not made for the beach, it performed better than expected. Just be sure to let them dry out properly and maybe avoid full submersion. But for long coastal walks, especially on firm sand or nearby trails, the New Balance 608 v5 is a sturdy, comfortable companion.
And who knows? Maybe the next time someone sees you walking on the beach in dad shoes, they’ll ask where you got them instead of raising an eyebrow.
